'More research needed on 20mph zones'

More research is needed before 20mph zones are rolled out further across the UK, according to experts.

The schemes have already been introduced by some local councils in urban areas but have their limits, according to the Royal Automobile Club Foundation (RACF).

Statistics from the group show average speeds fall by 9mph and annual accidents are down by 60 per cent in some 20mph zones.

However, RACF research development manager Elizabeth Dainton said: "It does not follow that 20mph zones should be implemented in residential areas without adequate consideration being given to local circumstances and public opinion."

The organisation says a whole network of 20mph zones is not "viable or desirable" and also said it would be difficult to enforce the zones using average speed cameras.

Drivers speeding in 20mph risk causing an accident or could face rise in their car insurance costs if caught by the police and issued with penalty points.

The RACF is an independent charity which aims to promote environmental, safety and economic issues relating to motoring.
