Londoners 'among those least likely to buy green cars'

Drivers from London are among the least likely to go green with a new eco-friendly car despite the capital's congestion charging, research shows.

A study by newcarnet.co.uk reveals more than one in three London drivers say they would not even consider an alternative fuel-powered car.

Only motorists in the north-east are less likely to go for an eco car, with 43 per cent of people in this region ruling the idea out.

Newcarnet.co.uk spokesman Massimo Pini states: "People need to know the real financial benefits and feel confident that alternative fuels are widely available if they’re going to switch from petrol and diesel."

He adds the government seemed to be merely increasing costs without promoting alternatives.

Going online to compare car insurance quotes is one way in which some drivers hit by congestion charging and fuel prices could cut the regular costs of UK motoring.

Earlier this week experts from eco organisation Clean Green Cars said the Toyota Prius hybrid car was "only the tip of the iceberg" when it comes to the future of green driving.
