Tyre pressures can make a 'big difference to fuel economy'

Drivers can cut fuel costs by making the decision to "drive less" and checking factors like tyre pressures, an environmental expert says.

The publisher of website Green Clean Cars states drivers also need to think about the way in which they drive.

Jay Nagley advises against accelerating too hard and breaking suddenly, recommending motorists "drive smoothly".

He states: "Make sure your tyres are inflated correctly, a lot of people don't do this and that makes quite a big difference to fuel economy."

The switch to the widespread use of more eco-friendly cars was a "very long-term process", he adds

In May the AA revealed the cost of motoring has increased by 11 per cent in the past year, with the cost doubling for 4x4s.

While some drivers may have found that their car insurance premiums have stayed the same, rising fuel and tax costs continue to make motoring more expensive.
