Families can save cash and protect the environment thanks to the progress of energy-efficient appliances, an expert has said.

The head of the Energy Saving Trust (EST) said appliances which use less power and are therefore cheaper can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This year has seen a significant increase in fuel bills for homeowners in the UK, with energy bills expected to increase even further.

EST head of trade marketing Adrian Arnold said if every home replaced old appliances with ones in the most energy efficient class available the UK would collectively save "over £1 billion" on power bills.

Householders struggling to cope with rising costs could also cut expenses by cutting car use and getting fresh quotes on other costs such as home insurance.

The EST is a non-profit organisation encouraging energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energy sources into the economic fabric of society.
