Drivers 'may vote out government' over fuel prices

Fuel price rises could end up causing motorists to vote the government out, a poll has revealed.

Figures from the AA show two-thirds of 18,500 members questioned would vote for a different government if petrol prices ended up above 149p per litre.

Nearly half of those polled thought the government was most to blame for current price rises.

AA president Edmund King said: "These results suggest that motorists have little faith in politicians to deliver motoring-friendly policies."

Commercial drivers took part in a fuel price protest last month, blockading parts of London with a convoy of trucks.

Hauliers and van drivers took part in the demonstration, saying their fuel bills have increased by almost 50 per cent in the past year.

Some commercial drivers have taken to using eco driving tips to reduce petrol consumption, while others are comparing van insurance quotes and considering swapping their insurance providers to cut costs.

The AA's June fuel price report said average UK prices for diesel rose by a record amount, beating May's big increase.
