Homeowners 'may be compelled' to improve energy efficiency

Homeowners could be ordered to improve the energy efficiency of their properties as part of new laws being considered by the government.

The Telegraph reports MPs are to unveil a renewable energy strategy which includes measures such as the banning of oil-fired boilers.

Single-glazed windows my also be targeted and grants could be handed out to people looking to fit wind turbines or solar panels.

Quoted by the newspaper, Greenpeace executive director John Sauven said: "If this plan becomes a reality, Britain will be a better, safer and more prosperous country."

He added the measures proposed would create new jobs, reduce the UK's dependence on foreign oil and would ultimately lead to smaller bills for energy.

The strategy is a consultation document and is geared to help Britain achieve tough renewable energy targets set by the European Commission.

As energy prices increase, some families are turning to energy-saving methods voluntarily to cut bills, while others could try other methods such as searching for cheap home insurance policies.

Tips on reducing power wastage from the Energy Saving Trust include filling door and window gaps to cut drafts and keep homes warmer.
