Homeowners 'should look for weak points in home security'

Homeowners should ensure their property is free of weak points which could tempt burglars, an ex-thief has advised.

Reformed burglar Michael Fraser, speaking on behalf of security firm AlertMe, warned windows without locks and front doors with a solitary catch are what the "opportunitists looks for".

Research by AlertMe has found 71 per cent of Britons are more worried about protecting their home from crime than they were a year ago.

Mr Fraser said: "If the front of a property looks weak it doesn't mean he's [a burglar] going to go by the front, he'll go round the back", adding usually the front of a house is more protected than the back.

He also said thieves look out for pets as this will mean a house is not using an alarm system.

Families concerned about home security could check with their home insurance provider if they are unsure of what their policy covers in the event of a break-in.
