Expert's second home insurance advice

An industry expert has said second home owners should remember to get cover for their extra pads, even if they are based abroad.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reacted to research by Zurich Private Clients showing only one in ten owners of second homes have contents insurance.

The same figures show a further one in ten people are unsure if their second home insurance cover is "adequate".

ABI spokesman Malcolm Tarling also said second home owners "should make sure they don't have items in the property other than those that they need."

He added he was not surprised by the Zurich figures as "one in four people doesn't have insurance for their first home".

Those running a second home were also advised cover was likely to be cheaper for a property with good security, such as those which are part of a guarded complex.

The ABI represents the collective interests of the UK's insurance industry with around 400 member companies providing 94 per cent of the country's domestic insurance services.
