Homeowners looking for more space but unable or unwilling to move thanks to the current property market are "overlooking" a simple solution, one firm has said.

According to Bespoke Garage Conversions, a recent survey from lender GE Money identified loft conversions and extensions as the most popular methods of making a home bigger.

The firm said garage conversions were a cheaper and easier way of extending a property and issued advice to people thinking about commissioning one.

Andy Wallbanks from Bespoke Garage Conversions said a garage could be transformed into "an attractive, usable room, perhaps creating an extra bedroom, office, playroom or even a dining room".

Last month Sainsbury's Finance said people looking to add value to their homes with improvements should contact home insurance providers before attempting large-scale DIY.

Bespoke Garage Conversions said people taking on a firm to complete a garage extension should check they are offering workmanship guarantees.
