Gocompare.com Case Study - David Baker

David Baker, a 63 year old retiree from Caldicot in South Wales was looking for a better deal on his car insurance before it was due for renewal in March 2007.

David explains: “I was looking to see if I could find a better price for my car insurance. As an older driver with no claims I thought I should be getting a better deal.” As David was browsing his regular news website, he noticed a link to Gocompare.com inviting readers to check the site for car insurance comparison. Following the link, he went through to the site and liked what he saw. It was the first time David had used a comparison site, as he’d always been put off using them after hearing about other people’s bad experiences.

“I’ve been told stories of having to put your details into the system numerous times, being given quotes that don’t match what you want, and the risk of being faced with insurance providers you’ve never heard of”, explains David.

“But Gocompare.com looked really good. The site is welcoming, and the forms I filled in were comprehensive yet easy to understand. I was really surprised that within minutes I had over 40 relevant quotes! Not only this, but I was impressed by the number of reputable, well known insurance companies that were listed.

“Years ago I got tied up with an insurance company that I hadn't heard of, but who offered me a good deal. They turned out to be a substandard company that went bankrupt and I was left uninsured. Since then I've made a point of insuring myself with credible and reputable companies.

“Once my quotes were displayed it was really easy to see which were best for me. The prices were listed in lowest to highest price order and the star rating system was so handy. I was well matched to the RAC quote as it had a five star rating, it's a well known reputable company, and the price was right at £125 less than my current provider.

“I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive at this stage as I couldn't quite understand how there was such a big saving. Being a bit cynical about these things, I didn’t know if it was a genuine quote, or if when I went through to their own site the 'real' quote would be different.

“I followed the quick link and was taken to the RAC site where I had the option of continuing over the internet, or calling a telephone number and quoting my reference number from Gocompare.com, which is what I did.

“I didn’t know how coordinated this would be, I was expecting to have to give my details again, but the design of Gocompare.com has clearly been given a lot of thought. The questions I'd already answered were completely relevant and had gone directly to the RAC to give them all of the information they needed. When I rang and gave them my reference number and my name, they quickly confirmed the same quote price and details.

“I’d give Gocompare.com and their insurer partners, in my case the RAC, a 10 plus. It was quick, easy, coordinated and credible, and has enabled me to get £125 off my previous insurance cost. Excellent.”
