Big six fight back begins with new tariff from EDF Energy

25 April 2014

EDF’s Blue+ Price Promise August 2015 becomes cheapest fixed deal, on average, without exit fees

While OVO Energy and First Utility continue to top the tables with their sub-£1,000 a year dual fuel tariffs, one of the UK’s biggest energy suppliers – EDF Energy – has mounted a comeback with a competitive fixed tariff, according to Gocompare.com.

EDF’s Blue+ Price Promise August 2015, which allows customers to fix their energy prices until the end of August next year, is currently the fifth cheapest tariff available, on average, with an annual dual fuel bill of £1,049. It’s also the cheapest tariff being offered by a ‘big six’ energy supplier at the moment.

But before rushing in to sign up for table-topping tariffs, people should bear in mind that finding the best tariff for their particular circumstances requires shopping around in order to find the best deal based on how much energy they use, where they live, and other factors. Reputable energy comparison websites make this task quick and easy.

*Dual fuel, payment by monthly direct debit, averaged across all UK regions and based on an annual energy usage of 13,500kWh gas and 3,200kWh electricity (medium user).

Caroline Lloyd, energy spokesperson at Gocompare.com said:

“This move by EDF Energy shows how important effective competition is in ensuring that customers are able to benefit from lower gas and electricity bills as energy companies vie for their business.

“While smaller providers are still topping the tables and offering the cheapest annual dual fuel bills, on average, it’s crucial that all suppliers – large and small – compete with one another so that the maximum number of people can access more affordable tariffs.

“And it just goes to show that there’s no single tariff from any supplier, be they a small, independent company, or a huge organisation serving millions of customers, that is best for everyone. So the only way people can be sure that they’re getting the right tariff for them is to compare all the deals being offered from as many providers as possible.”
