New poll names the nation’s favourite property show presenter

17 June 2015

Personality beats professional expertise as DIY show host beats designers, architects and property investors

Every TV channel has its hit property shows but a new poll carried out by Gocompare.com has found that the shows’ presenters can go out of fashion as quickly as chintz curtains and flock wallpaper.

The nation’s favourite property show presenter has very little experience of building, renovating or designing at all, and is equally at home hosting a quiz show as presenting the BBC’s DIY SOS. Step forward UK viewers’ favourite property show frontman, Nick Knowles.

Only just shaded into second place is the high-brow host of Chanel 4’s Grand Designs, Kevin McCloud MBE. In third place it’s Phil Spencer of Location, Location, Location, beating his co-host Kirstie Allsopp who finished in fifth place. Other presenters in the Top 10 list include George Clarke (of the eponymous George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces), Lucy Alexander (Homes Under the Hammer) and Sarah Beeny (Property Ladder).

The BBC’s Changing Rooms pioneered the format of the property makeover show and paved the way for the vast selection of home decorating, home renovating, homebuying and homebuilding programmes we enjoy today. However, the show’s original run came to an end 11 years ago, which could explain why Linda Barker and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen placed ninth and tenth respectively.

The UK’s favourite property show presenters:

1st – Nick Knowles – DIY SOS

2nd – Kevin McCloud – Grand Designs; Man Made Home

3rd – Phil Spencer – Location, Location, Location; The Secret Agent

4th – George Clarke – The Restoration Man; George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces

5th – Kirstie Allsopp – Location, Location, Location; The Property Chain

6th – Sarah Beeny – Property Ladder; Britain’s Best Homes

7th – Martin Roberts – Homes Under the Hammer

8th – Lucy Alexander – Homes Under the Hammer

9th – Linda Barker – Changing Rooms; 60 Minute Makeover

10th – Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen – Changing Rooms; House Gift

Ben Wilson from Gocompare.com Home Insurance, said: “Switch on your TV and it won’t be long before you find a programme about building, improving, buying or selling your own home or investment property. From Grand Designs to George Clarke’sAmazing Spaces, there’s a property show to suit all tastes, budgets and ambitions. However, what this poll shows is that you don’t have to be a property expert to become the most popular property show presenter. Indeed, with Nick Knowles on DIY SOS, although he’s always keen to help, the builders seem to do their best to keep him away from the power tools.

“With Grand Designs, Kevin McCloud has made cutting-edge architecture a prime time TV hit and having worked in design his entire career his expertise, insight and honest criticism has made him a viewers’ favourite. However, with plenty of new property programmes in development, including Country House Rescue, Building the Dream, and Million Pound Homes, to name just a few being made by Channel 4, it will be interesting to see which presenters win over UK viewers in the future.”

In February 2015, Vision Critical conducted an online survey among 2,019 randomly selected British adults who are Springboard UK panellists.  The margin of error-which measures sampling variability-is +/- 2.2%. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and regional data to ensure samples representative of the entire adult population of United Kingdom. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
