With Christmas party season coming up, Gocompare.com Car Insurance is warning drivers to check they’re covered before handing over their keys to a valet service.
A review of 260* comprehensive car insurance policies by the comparison website found 43% of policies exclude ‘damage to the vehicle whilst in the control of valet parking staff’. The warning comes as motorists opt for valet parking services at Christmas party venues or hand over their keys to ‘meet and greet’ valet parking providers at airports.
Matt Oliver, car insurance spokesperson at Gocompare.com, said: “Though often associated with the rich and famous, valet parking is actually becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with many hotels and other venues such as airports offering the service.
“While valet parking might seem like a novel thing to do at a fancy Christmas party venue or can offer a convenient way to park your car at the airport, in many cases your insurance won’t cover you for any damage to your car while it’s in the care of the valet. This exclusion can also apply to other services, such as attended car washes commonly found in supermarkets and petrol stations.
“If you are using a parking service this winter, be sure to thoroughly check your car for damage before you drive away. Most valet parking providers should provide their own cover should something happen to your vehicle, however this isn’t a guarantee and the level of cover on offer, along with the terms and conditions, can vary significantly.”
