Why choose Post Office home insurance?

Post Office is a long-standing part of British society and has more branches than all of the UK’s banks and building societies put together.*

It offers buildings insurance, contents insurance or a combined buildings and contents policy.

You can choose from two levels of cover - Silver and Gold - and tailor them to suit your needs.

Optional add-ons are available, including home emergency cover and family legal protection.

And you can easily manage your account from the online self-service centre which gives you instant access to your policy documents.

Post Office home insurance also offers a free legal helpline service where customers can get advice on things like dealing with neighbour disputes.

Post Office home insurance cover types

Post Office Silver

Buildings cover up to £1 million and contents cover up to £80,000.

You can buy optional extra cover like additional accidental damage and home emergency cover for a fee.

Post Office Gold

Includes everything that Silver cover does, but with some higher maximum claim limits. Extras like accidental damage, away from home and matching sets cover are also included as standard.

Gold cover buildings insurance also includes acquired disability cover. This will pay for changes to your home (up to £10,000) if you become permanently physically disabled during your policy term.

Post Office buildings insurance

Post Office buildings insurance covers your home and its fixtures and fittings for things like fire, flooding, leaking water and malicious damage.

Both Silver and Gold policies cover the cost of the building up to £1 million.

Also included in buildings insurance is:

  • Rent and alternative accommodation cover - Pays for the cost of somewhere to stay if your home is severely damaged and unhabitable
  • Key cover - If you lose your keys or they’re stolen, the policy will cover the cost of locksmith charges and replacement keys
  • Trace and access cover - Pays for the cost of finding and fixing the source of a leak in your property
  • Additional accidental damage cover - Available as an optional add-on to a Silver policy but included in Gold cover

Post Office contents insurance

This covers all your household items for theft and damage caused by disasters like fire and flooding.

You can choose contents cover for up to £80,000 on a Silver policy and up to £100,000 on a Gold policy.

Accidental breakage to home entertainment equipment like your TV, home computer and games console is included.

It can also pay for things like replacing the contents of your freezer if it breaks down and the food gets spoiled, and for lost or damaged cash and credit cards.

Post Office home insurance optional extras

Your policy can be tailored to suit your needs with the following optional extras:

Additional accidental damage

This covers sudden, unexpected harm done to your building or contents by you or someone in your house. By accident, and not intentionally, of course.

This could be dropping a curry onto your living room carpet, for example. Drilling through a pipe when you’re doing some DIY would fall under accidental damage on your buildings insurance. This type of cover comes as standard with Post Office Gold policies

Away from home cover

Covers possessions, like your money and mobile, when you take them outside of the home. Cover up to £3,000 is included with Gold cover and is available as an optional add-on to a Silver policy

Home emergency

Covers the cost of repairs, parts and call-out charges in emergency household situations - like a burst pipe which damages your home

Family legal protection

Provides you with legal advice, guidance and representation, when appropriate, for dealing with legal issues - like claiming compensation for an injury that wasn’t your fault
