What does Privilege home insurance cover?

Standard home insurance

Privilege’s standard home insurance suits smaller households.

It offers unlimited cover for rebuilding your home and you can insure contents up to the value of £50,000.

There are a range of optional extras you can add including accidental damage, personal possessions, home emergency and family legal protection.

Platinum home insurance

Privilege platinum home insurance offers a higher level of cover to suit larger households with more belongings.

It comes with unlimited cover for the cost of rebuilding your home and up to £100,000 cover for your household belongings.

Matching sets cover is included as standard - which means that, if any part of a matching set or suite is damaged and can’t be repaired or replaced, the entire set will be replaced as new.

Other benefits include cover for business equipment up to £10,000, and up to £3,000 to cover the cost of downloaded media like films and music.

It also comes with additional benefits as standard - personal possessions and home emergency cover, accidental damage and family legal protection are all included in the policy.

Privilege buildings insurance

This protects you financially from the costs of rebuilding or repairing your home if it becomes damaged by events including fires, storms, floods, falling trees or subsidence.

Damage to your property’s walls, floors, roof, windows and permanent fixtures and fittings (like your fitted kitchen and bathroom suite) is covered, as well as underground pipes servicing your property.

Privilege buildings insurance also includes:

  • Alternative accommodation cover - pays up to £50,000 on a platinum policy and £25,000 on a standard policy to cover the cost of staying somewhere else if your home is left uninhabitable
  • Trace and access cover - up to £5,000 on a platinum policy and £1,000 on a standard policy. Pays for the removal and replacement of any parts of your home to find the source of water or oil leaks that are causing damage
  • Property owners’ liability cover - up to £5 million with a platinum policy and £2 million with a standard policy - pays out if someone claims against you, say for an accident or injury they had in your home

Privilege contents insurance

Covers you for loss or theft of your household goods - everything from your furniture and furnishings to your clothes, jewellery and home entertainment equipment. Your contents are also covered against damage that might happen because of an insured event like a fire or flood.

Privilege contents insurance includes:

  • Up to £50,000 cover for your contents with standard home insurance and up to £100,000 with platinum cover
  • New for old contents cover
  • Contents outside - you’re covered for possessions kept on your land for up to £500 with standard contents cover and £2,500 with platinum cover
  • Theft from outbuildings and garages - up to £1,000 with a standard policy and £5,000 with platinum cover

Platinum contents cover also includes things like:

  • Garden plants up to £2,500
  • Money in the home up to £500
  • Contents at university, college or boarding school up to £10,000

Privilege home insurance extras

The cover below is included as standard with a platinum policy but can be bought as added extras on standard home insurance policies.

Personal possessions

Covers your possessions when you take them out of the home anywhere in Britain, as well as up to 60 days abroad.

Any items worth more than £2,000 (£4,000 with platinum insurance) must be named on the policy to be covered against accidental loss, damage or theft.

Cash up to £250 (£500 with platinum insurance) and bicycles up to £500 (£1,000 with platinum insurance) are also covered. And if something gets stolen out of your parked car, you’re covered up to £250 (£1,000 with platinum insurance).

Accidental damage

You can rest easy knowing that any unintentional and unexpected mishaps in the home are covered with an accidental damage add-on.

Under buildings insurance you’re protected if the fabric of your home is damaged - like cracking your bath, or a football smashing your window.

Under contents insurance you’ll be covered for accidents like spilling red wine on your sofa or dropping your laptop down the stairs.

Home emergency

This cover gets you access to 24-hour repairs in emergency situations. This includes scenarios like your central heating failing, loss of electrical power or if your front door lock breaks.

A qualified tradesman will do the repairs and you’re covered for labour, call-out costs and parts up to £500.

You can even claim for a night’s emergency accommodation up to £250 if things can’t be sorted right away.

Family legal protection

Provides you with legal advice and up to £100,000 for legal costs to pursue or defend against a personal legal dispute.

For example, personal injury claims, boundary and neighbour property disputes, and employment disputes. Also includes a 24/7 helpline.
