Mobile and SIM-only deals
A SIM-only deal is a package of minutes, texts and data for a monthly fee. It’s like a pay monthly contract, just without the phone.
With mobile phones costing more than ever before, customers are keeping their handsets for longer. If you don’t need a new mobile phone, a SIM-only tariff could be right for you.
Ofcom reported that 19% of adults had a SIM-only contract in 2018, growing from 13% in 2017. Data provided to Ofcom by leading operators Ofcom in 2017 showed that pay-monthly SIM-only users paid an average of £17 per month while pay monthly contracts with a handset users paid an average of £35.
When your current mobile phone contract ends, you will need to contact your existing provider. If not, your network provider will continue to charge you the same monthly fee. If you switch to SIM-only on the same network, the move should happen without you having to do much Your provider will confirm the switch details.
If you're thinking about switching to another network, you will need to make sure that your contract is finished. You usually check the end date via your online account or by calling. You find out if you have any early cancellation charges by texting 'INFO' to 85075 (a free Ofcom number).
Switching mobile networks has never been easier. Ofcom’s new text-to-switch service means you can start the process of switching by just texting from any UK network.
If you want to switch and keep your existing number text 'PAC' to 65075 (a free number provided by Ofcom) to begin the process, you will receive a reply from your provider within a minute. They will send you a PAC code and any further information required to switch.
To get a new number when you switch, text 'STAC' to 75075 (this number is also a free number provided by Ofcom). Texting this number will provide you with a ‘service termination authorisation code’.
Once you have all the information you need, here’s what you need to do next:
