Using the 3 metrics of mobile, broadband and public wifi connectivity we weighted these against each other to produce an overall connectivity score for each city.
For each city region of the UK, we used existing data to measure the 3G and 4G connectivity. This took the % availability across all providers of both 3G and 4G across premises, roads, and general outdoor geographical areas. We then created an index using these scores as well as the average data downloaded by GB in these regions to create an overall score.
We measured how different regions scored for availability across NGA and SFBB lines. We also used the average data downloaded and uploaded by gigabytes, and the average download and upload speed for each local authority.
We divided population by the number of public wifi hotspots and BT wifi hotspots for each city as well as the average data downloaded for these public hotspots. These were then weighted together to produce a wifi hotspot score for each city.
