SSE is first of ‘big six' to announce 8.2% energy price hike

09 October 2013
  • Increase in energy prices to add £104.48* a year to average dual fuel bill
  • Brits have seen energy prices leap by almost £400, or nearly 50%, in five years**

SSE customers should brace themselves for higher energy bills as the ‘big six' energy provider announces its plans to raise gas and electricity prices by an average of 8.2%.

The hikes are due to come into effect on 15 November 2013, just in time for the colder, darker winter months, when gas and electricity use is at its peak.

Jeremy Cryer, energy spokesperson at price comparison website Gocompare.com, said: "SSE's announcement has kicked off the inevitable domino-effect of energy price rises that we have come to expect at this time of year. It's now just a case of when, rather than if, the rest of the ‘big six' will follow suit.

"This price rise will affect many of SSE's customers, adding as much as £104.48 to an annual average dual fuel bill. If people want to ensure that they don't spend more than they need to on the energy they use this winter, they should shop around now to find the best tariff for their region and energy consumption. It takes just five minutes to compare hundreds of tariffs, and with most people saving £153.21*** or more on their annual bill by switching providers, that's time well spent.

"And if you're concerned about the rising cost of gas and electricity and would like to have some control over how much you spend for a longer period, consider switching to a fixed deal."
