It’s the time of year when sluggish boilers are kicked back into life as thousands of householders across the UK turn the heating up - but how many would be covered if their boiler decides to give up the ghost?
Gocompare.com has researched 312* home contents insurance policies and has found that only 55 policies offer home emergency as standard, but that a further 151 policies offer home emergency cover as an option.
Of the 55 policies that provide home emergency as standard, 49 offer main heating cover only, while only 35 policies cover heating, hot water failure, plumbing and drainage. So, only 11% of all home contents insurance policies cover heating, hot water failure, plumbing and drainage.
Gocompare.com’s home insurance expert, Ben Wilson, said: “This time of the year it’s more important than ever to make sure that you have the right insurance protection for your home.
“Home contents insurance isn’t all about burglary and accidental damage, contents insurance can cover much more than just that and can save you lots of money should an emergency arise.”
Ben explained: “How many times, as the temperatures tumble, have you heard a friend or colleague say – “my boiler has packed in” or “my pipes have burst”? Well, having an insurance policy that covers all of these eventualities will be a great weight off homeowners’ minds.
“Just by checking your policy or contacting your provider, you can check to see if you are covered, and as our research showed, it’s easy to add additional home emergency cover to your contents insurance.
“Getting lumbered with a massive plumbing or boiler bill at this time of the year would be everybody’s unwanted Christmas gift, so have peace of mind this Christmas season and make sure you’re covered for every eventuality and check your home insurance cover.”
