Comparison website Gocompare.com has backed Ofgem’s efforts to get the UK switching, as new figures published today by the energy regulator show that 6.1 million domestic energy supply accounts were switched in 2015, a 15% increase on 2014.
Gocompare.com’s own figures show that the website handled 83% more energy switches in January 2016 than a year ago, with almost 60% of switchers choosing a smaller energy provider over one of the so called ‘big six’*
Gocompare.com is urging households that haven’t switched recently to take matters into their own hands and save up to £292** on their gas and electricity bills by ditching their standard tariffs.
Ben Wilson, energy spokesperson at Gocompare.com, said: “I’m not surprised by Ofgem’s latest figures, in fact our own stats for 2015 show an even stronger trend for energy switching which has continued into this year too. In the last 12 months we have seen falling energy prices which have prompted an aggressive price war, led by a growing number of smaller providers.
“The meagre price cuts we’ve seen from the ‘big six’ in recent weeks are doing nothing to stem the tide of disgruntled energy customers looking for a better deal.”
“I believe the energy market has been fundamentally changed by the arrival of new players and what we are now seeing is consumers embracing this new reality. Ofgem has recognised it too, which is why they recommend consumers switch to get a better deal. Put simply; the best-buy dual fuel deals on offer today represent significant savings for most people, but it is down to homeowners themselves to go and get those savings by switching tariffs.”
