How we protect your data

When we ask you for information that can be used to identify you (for example your name, date of birth, address and suchlike) we encrypt the data you give us using a secure connection, which prevents it from being intercepted by a third party. The simplest way to tell if you have a secure connection is to look at your browser address bar; if the page is secure the URL will change from ‘http:’ to ‘https:’ and, depending on the browser you’re using, you may also see a locked padlock symbol.

We also use the latest online security measure, Extended Validation Secure Socket Layer (EV SSL), to protect your personal data. EV SSL is the best solution for organisations who deal with personal and financial information or login credentials. EV SSL is designed to provide proof that the website you are using can be trusted and your information will be encrypted.

Using an EV SSL (or extended validation) Certificate means that Gocompare.com has undergone a number of comprehensive checks to confirm its validity and has been provided with a certificate of authenticity which can be recognised by your browser.

How does EV SSL work?

Modern web browsers use a traffic light system to show the validity of websites when using secure browsing sessions (https).

  • Red

Websites identified as being fraudulent or malicious, or those that have a revoked or expired certificate, will display a RED address bar with no padlock symbol.

  • Green

When you visit a page on a site that has extended validation, all or part of the browser’s address bar will turn GREEN and display a padlock symbol. This means that communication between your browser and the website is encrypted and confirms that the site has been verified as authentic and has passed a comprehensive identification check.

  • Amber

If the browser address bar is amber or yellow and has no padlock symbol then the authenticity of the certificate (or the certification authority that issued it) cannot be verified. This might indicate a problem with the certification authority’s website.

  • White

If the browser address bar is white then the certificate has standard rather than extended validation. This means that communication between your browser and the website is encrypted but, unlike with extended validation, the site has not been verified as authentic.

Is EV SSL recognised by all browsers?

The EV SSL system is recognised by most browsers (including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari) , although there are variations in the way each browser displays the validation. If you don't have the latest version of your browser you can normally download it by visiting the provider's website.
